Avondale operation’s main shipyard encompasses nearly 300 acres, a ship construction area featuring five building positions on land, and three wet dock outfitting positions. The "factory" is an under-roof steel fabricating and assembly facility that uses four distinct production lines for construction and assembly of ship modules. All told, Avondale has more than one million sq. Ft. Of roofed facilities, an 81,000-ton floating drydock, a 20,000-ton floating drydock, A 600-ton floating heavy lift derrick barge, and 47 cranes augment its ship construction versatility. Description:
Avondale Operation employs over 6,000 shipyard professionals and builds for the U. S. Navy amphibious assault ships, such as the LPD 17 Class of amphibious transport dock ships; navy fleet support ships, such as the large, medium speed, roll-on/roll-off (LSMR) Bob Hope Class of strategic sealift ships; and a variety of other ships, such as amphibious assault ships (LSDs) and support ships (T-AO fleet replenishment oilers).Additionally, the company builds the most environmentally safe double-hulled tankers used by commercial oil companies, and builds a wide array of ships for the U.
